Bombardier CRJ700 Engine – GE CF34-8C1 – GE CF34-8C5B1

Since the CRJ700 first took flight in 1999, there have been two different Bombardier CRJ700 engines. The original CRJ700 engine was the General Electric (GE) CF34-8C1 engine. Certified by the FAA at the end of 1999, the Bombardier CRJ700 engine was the first in the CRJ series to be FADEC controlled (Full Authority Digital Engine Control - electronically controlled). The GE CF34-8C1 engine is capable of producing a maximum thrust of 13,790 pounds.

The Second Bombardier CRJ700 Engine – GE CF34-8C5B1

In May 2005 the next CRJ700 engine, the General Electric CF34-8C5B1 was announced as being available for the CRJ700 jet. The GE CF34-8C5B1 is a derivative of the CRJ900 engine, the CF34-8C5. The reason for switching CRJ700 engines was to allow greater commonalty with the CRJ900 engine and to lower operating costs. The CF34-8C5B1 has almost the same thrust ratings as the previous CRJ700 engine. The only difference is in the continuous thrust rating. The CF34-8C5B1 engine has a 13,280 lbs maximum continuous thrust rating, while the CF34-8C1 is 13,277 lbs of thrust.
Both CRJ700 engines are approved by the FAA to be used interchangeably (intermixed) on the CRJ700 aircraft (In accordance with AFM).
